APPG Event | Local Decision-Making for UK Fishing

Our upcoming online event will focus on Local Decision-Making for UK Fishing. We plan to hear from local councils, partnerships and fishing collectives about how regional management can benefit fisheries and fishing communities.

The event will take place via Zoom on Tuesday 29 September at 11am - 12.30pm.

Fisheries Bill Enters Report Stage

The Fisheries Bill has undergone scrutiny by the Public Bill Committee, who reported to the House by 17 September. Their report will be available soon on Hansard. The transcripts for the Committee Stage debates are available here.

Defra Guidance on Brexit Food Labelling Changes

Defra has released guidance on food labelling changes from January 2021, namely for goods exported to the EU and those sold in the UK. This includes information relevant to seafood products, such as hygiene legislation, health and identification marks and catch certificates.

MMO Helps Industry Prepare for New Trading Relationships 

The MMO are helping the fishing industry prepare for new trading relationships. They have published an article to raise awareness of the catch and sales records that fishermen must submit in order for the industry to operate from 1 January 2021.

Marine Scotland Publishes Updates for Transition Period

Marine Scotland has published a webpage covering useful links for Scottish seafood imports and exports, to help the fisheries sector prepare for the end of the Brexit transition period. The UK will trade with the EU on a 'third country' basis from January 2021.

Welsh Minister Responds to Welsh Gov's 'Brexit and Our Seas' Consultation 
The Welsh Minister for Environment, Energy and Rural Affairs has issued a statement stressing the need to develop a Welsh fisheries policy which 'works for Wales'. 

Seafish Release September's 'Marine Environment News in Brief'
The update includes the Seafood Innovation Fund's Baseline Review of innovation technologies relevant to UK seafood, and a summary of the Welsh government's Marine Planning webinars. 

New Marine Research Centre for Yorkshire
The Holderness Fishing Industry Group has opened the new centre in Bridlington, which will conduct important research on North Sea fishing grounds.

Lerwick Port Continues to Feel Effects of the Pandemic
The Lerwick Port Authority in Shetland says the effects of Covid-19 continue to be felt through reduced daily port activity, although fishing vessel traffic is stable.

Marine Scotland Food and Drink Fortnight 
Marine Scotland speak to Shetland Seafood Markets as part of a series that shines a light on how the seafood industry has adapted to the coronavirus pandemic.
