Fisheries Bill Progresses Through Commons

The Fisheries Bill underwent the Second Reading in the House of Commons on 1 September. It will now be scrutinised by a Public Bill Committee, who are expected to report to the House by 17 September. The debate can be watched here and the transcript read here.

Consultation on UK Marine Monitoring Programmes

Defra, the Northern Ireland Executive, the Scottish Government and the Welsh Government are seeking views on the updated marine monitoring programmes, which aim to move UK waters towards ‘Good Environmental Status’. Any marine users or interest groups are invited to respond before 17 November.

Dogger Bank Scallop Fishery Closure Extended

The king scallop fishery in the North Sea around Dogger Bank is to remain closed until 11 October. Along with a Cefas survey and analysis, a public call for evidence found consensus from stakeholders that the closure should be extended to protect spawning stocks and allow future sustainable harvesting.

Seafish Seeks Insight into Pandemic Experiences

Seafish is asking fishing vessel owners to share their experiences of the impacts of Covid-19 in their annual socio-economic survey. This will include the performance of fishing businesses, and their views on the effectiveness of government support measures in response to the pandemic.

MSC Extends Remote Assessments and Audits
The Marine Stewardship Council has announced that remote assessments of certificate holders will continue where Covid-19 restrictions prevent on-site audits.

Eastbourne Fishing Quay Project Begins Construction
The project will enable fishers to own or lease their own quay, which should give them long-term security and the opportunity to make direct seafood sales.

Waitrose Joins Ocean Disclosure Project
Waitrose is the latest UK supermarket to join the initiative, which is designed to increase transparency on the sustainability of seafood sourcing.
