APPG Event | UK Fisheries in a Changing Climate

Next week's event will explore the effects of climate change on UK fisheries, and investigate ideas about how the UK fleet can adapt. We will hear from a range of people with expertise and first-hand experience of the relationship between climate change on the UK fishing industry.

The event will take place via Zoom on Wednesday 4 November at 10am-11.30am.

The APPG Secretariat has published a policy brief detailing the talking points and outcomes from the Local Decision-Making for UK Fishing event that took place last month. It examines existing local governance models and possible future directions for local decision-making.

Consultation on Remote Electronic Monitoring

Defra has launched an open call for evidence for its consultation on increasing Remote Electronic Monitoring on fishing vessels. REM includes integrated on-board systems of cameras, gear sensors, video storage, and GPS units. Interested parties can submit their views before 30 November.
Call for Evidence on England's Marine Habitats

The MMO has launched a call for evidence seeking proposals to better safeguard England’s marine habitats. They are initially seeking views on four offshore sites (Dogger Bank SAC, Inner Dowsing, Race Bank and North Ridge MPA, South Dorset MCZ, and The Canyons MCZ) and one inshore site (Studland Bay MCZ).

Guidance for After the Transition Period

The MMO has published a 'one stop shop' guide for commercial fishers, merchants and exporrters, to signpost the steps that seafood and fishing businesses may need to take to continue trading after 1 January 2021, when the Brexit transition period comes to an end.

Fisheries Bill Completes Report Stage

The Fisheries Bill has undergone the report stage and third reading in the House of Commons, and will now return to the House of Lords for consideration of amendments. The transcript for the Report Stage debate is available here.

Defra Releases Statement on Approach to International Fisheries Negotiations
In light of the upcoming termination of the EU exit transition period, the department has updated Parliament on existing and potential future fisheries agreements.

Consultation Concludes Dogger Bank Scallop Fishery Remains Closed
The consultation, run by the MMO, heard from three large fishing industry bodies that recommended the fishery remained closed until February 2021.

Scotland's Fisheries Secretary Seeks Clarification on Fisheries Funding
Fergus Ewing MSP has written to Environment Secretary of State George Eustice MP for clarity on future funding following the UK's exit from the EMFF.

NE Atlantic Fisheries Impacted by Climate Change, Study Reports
A new study suggests that small and medium-sized fisheries in the area are highly impacted, and the authors recommend novel climate-ready policy approaches.

Study Investigates Impact of Offshore Wind Farms on European Fisheries
The study examined the impact of wind farms on fisheries, and also highlighted pathways and policy recommendations that could lead to sector co-existence.
