APPG Event | UK Fisheries in a Changing Climate

We are pleased to launch our next event, which will explore the effects of climate change on UK fisheries, and hear ideas on how the UK fleet can adapt. This event will hear from people with expertise and first-hand experience of the effects of climate change on the UK fishing industry.

The event will take place via Zoom on Wednesday 4 November at 10am-11.30am.

Parliament News

Government Launches Consultations on UK Fishing

The package of 3 consultations seeks views on how to boost the UK fishing industry. This includes a strengthened 'economic link' for English vessels, how to split new quota between the four nations of the UK, and how to distribute England’s quota share among its fishing fleet.
Scottish Government Considers Fisheries Changes

The Scottish government is considering major changes for fisheries management from 2021. Possible changes include introducing TACs for some non-quota species, quota management responsibilities for groups other than POs, and strengthening of regional inshore fisheries groups.

Support for Northern Irish Fishing Fleet

The Northern Ireland government has announced a support package of up to £1.7 million to support their fishing fleet in responding to shifting markets for key species, in light of Covid-19. This is in addition to the £1.5 million package administered in April, and has been developed through discussions with industry.

Fisheries Bill Completes Report Stage

The Fisheries Bill has undergone the report stage and third reading in the House of Commons, and will now return to the House of Lords for consideration of amendments. The transcript for the Report Stage debate is available here.

The newly published report shows that the fleet saw £1 billion turnover last year. An accompanying online tool enables exploration of the report’s underlying data.

Recommendation for Classifying Deckhands on Over-9m Vessels as Skilled Workers
The Migration Advisory Committee made the recommendation which, if accepted by the Home Office, could make it easier for UK vessel owners to recruit foreign crews.

The guidance released by the Scottish government and Food Standards Scotland includes information on trade and certification requirements.

New 'Safety Net' Initiative Addresses Small-Scale Fishers' Financial Resilience
The initiative, launched by Seafarers UK, is backed by research in a landmark report that proposes ten recommendations for policy, charities and industry.

Project UK Launches Website Exploring Fishery Improvement Projects
Project UK is a collaborative partnership led by MSC, that aims to help UK fisheries become more sustainable by helping them meet MSC certification.
