UK and Norway Sign Historic Fisheries Agreement

The UK-Norway Fisheries Framework Agreement is the first of its kind for the UK as a newly independent coastal state. It sets out the terms for the UK and Norway to hold annual negotiations on access to waters and quotas. The treaty incorporates the same principles that the UK is currently seeking with the EU.
Northern Ireland Accepts UK Fisheries Bill

Stormont has passed a key piece of legislation that approves the extension of the UK Fisheries Bill to Northern Ireland. Edwin Poots, the Agriculture Minister for Northern Ireland, said it was necessary to adopt the Bill to ensure they were able to support the fishing industry after the transition period.

2019 UK Sea Fisheries Statistics Published

The MMO has published the UK Sea Fisheries Statistics report for 2019. Key figures show a decrease in landings compared to 2018, mainly driven by a reduction in quota by key pelagic species, and highlight the UK’s status as a net importer of fish.

Fisheries Bill Enters Report Stage

The Fisheries Bill underwent scrutiny by the Public Bill Committee, who reported their findings to the House in mid-September. The Report Stage for the Bill will begin from a date yet to be announced. The transcripts for the Committee Stage debates are available here.
