Aquaculture in the UK: Event Recap

FISP Scheme Opens for Applications as Part of the £100M Seafood Fund

The government’s Fisheries Industry Science Partnerships (FISP) scheme, created to help rejuvenate the fisheries and seafood sector, is open until 22 November 2021. Eligible applicants include members of the fishing industry and research organisations.
MMO Accepting Applications for Additional Quota

In response to concerns from small-scale fishers, the MMO is now accepting applications for additional quota by capped licence vessels (under 10m) until early December This covers some of the extra quota received by England under the Trade & Cooperation Agreement. 
Call for Evidence on Sandeel and Norway Pout Management to Address Stock Declines

The UK government has launched a call for evidence on views on potential measures to manage stocks of sandeel and Norway pout in UK waters. These species are a staple for many seabirds but are sensitive to changing environmental conditions.
Coastal States Discuss TAC Shares for Three NE Atlantic Pelagic Fisheries

NEAFC nations commenced discussion last week on Total Allowable Catches for three shared pelagic stocks in the NE Atlantic - mackerel, blue whiting, and herring. Last year saw a 55% overshoot on advised mackerel quotas for 2021.

Grimsby Fish Market Sees Record Prices for Cod and Haddock
The price increase follows reduced landings from distant-water fleets, Icelandic vessels targeting different stocks, and bad weather, amongst other factors.

Seafish Launches Campaign Exploring How Climate Change Impacts UK Seafood
The campaign provides a suite of resources to explore the topic. Businesses can also sign up to a new e-alert service for seafood-relevant climate change updates. 

Bespoke Financial Information Now Available for Fishers via The Safety Net Website
The ‘one-stop-shop’ website features tailored information and support for the fishing community on money management, credit choices, debt advice and mental health.

Man Overboard Awareness Events for Fishing Industry Members
Funded by the Fishing Industry Safety Group and run by the RNLI and Seafish, the events look to educate fishermen on the dangers associated with falling overboard.
