APPG Event | Staying Safe at Sea

We are pleased to launch our next online event, which will explore how legislation, outreach, technology and collaboration can improve fishing safety. This event will hear from a diverse array of voices from around the UK that are helping to improve fishing safety. Presentations will be followed by questions to the panel and an inclusive discussion.

The event will take place via Zoom on Tuesday 1 December at 11:00am - 12:30pm.

Parliament News

UK Signs Agreements with Faroes, Greenland and Iceland

The UK has signed a series of agreements with three coastal states, which each demonstrate bilateral intentions to co-operate on fishing matters, such as fisheries management, access to waters and trade. This is in preparation for when the UK leaves the Common Fisheries Policy on 1 January 2021.
MMO Will Fast-Track English Fishing Grants

The MMO has said it intends to fast-track grants designed to aid England’s ports and fishing industry, and to provide health and safety equipment for fishing vessels. These grants re-purpose remaining EMFF funds to provide a rapid response to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

APPG Climate Change Event Recording Available

The APPG on Fisheries Secretariat has published the recording of last week's event on UK Fishing in a Changing Climate, along with condensed answers given by speakers in response to panelists' questions. A full post-event policy brief will also be available in due course.

Fisheries Bill Returns to House of Lords

The Fisheries Bill has now returned to the House of Lords for consideration of the amendments made in the House of Commons. This 'ping pong' stage may see the Bill bounce between the Houses several times. You can keep track of its progress here.

The newly established Scottish Nephrops Working Group has secured £1million funding to support Scotland’s Nephrops sector through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Research Finds Only 14% of Seafood Industry Board Members are Women
The International Association for Women in the Seafood Industry also found that only 4% of the hundred largest seafood companies had female CEOs.

Creel Limitation Pilot Scheme Begins off Outer Hebrides
Developed in partnership with the local fishing industry, the two-year scheme intends to test whether practical limitations can enhance shellfish stocks in the future.
