Seafish Releases Online Support Guidance Tool

Seafish have released a new online tool to help UK seafood businesses easily identify their eligibility for the governmental financial support schemes available during the coronavirus pandemic. The tool also guides users on how to apply for support.

The #SeaForYourself campaign, led by Seafish and Defra, is promoting consumption of seafood caught in UK waters. The campaign aims to support the UK fishing industry, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Businesses can participate using campaign assets available through Seafish's asset bank.

Seafish Offers Free and Subsidised Online Courses

With funding from the Maritime & Coastguard Agency and Trinity House, Seafish are offering free online courses for fishermen covering navigation, engineering and stability awareness. To keep costs low, they are also subsiding e-learning courses for onshore workers in the seafood sector, covering food hygiene and health and safety.

New Fisheries Bill Progressing Through Lords

The House of Lords finished close analysis of the Fisheries Bill on 11 March. The Bill will now move on to the report stage, at a date to be announced. The Secretariat's digest of initial significant changes since 2019 is accessible here.

The fund, of which £500k will immediately assist UK fishing communities, is aided by partners such as The Fishmongers' Company and Fishermen's Mission.

The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee heard fisheries experts present on issues facing the sector and solutions to them.

UK Catch Sector Under Pressure From Falling Seafood Prices
Dropping prices, especially for species normally exported overseas, could potentially be addressed through the promotion of UK species for local consumption.

Seafood Cornwall Supports NHS Staff in New Initiative
Seafood Cornwall's #FishToYourDoor campaign is launching the #NHSFishFridays initiative, which will offer significant discounts on local seafood to NHS staff.

Scottish Seafood Industry Urges Supermarkets to Reopen Fresh Fish Counters
Seafood Scotland has written to major retailers on behalf of the industry, emphasising the importance of the domestic market in light of diminishing exports.
