Data, Tech and Innovation in UK Fishing

UK, Norway and EU Sign Trilateral Agreement on Catch Limits for 2021

The UK has reached an agreement with the EU and Norway on catch limits for 2021 for six jointly-managed fish stocks in the North Sea. This marks the first time the UK has participated in such discussions as an independent coastal state.
MMO Releases Further Details on the Seafood Response Fund

Further information has been released on the Seafood Response Fund (SRF), detailing eligibility and payment logistics. The SRF is designed to help UK fishing and shellfish aquaculture businesses affected by the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic and Brexit earlier this year.
Home Office Accepts Deckhands as Skilled Workers

The UK Home Office has accepted a recommendation to classify deckhands on large vessels with three or more years of experience as eligible for skilled workers visas. This makes it easier for skippers and vessel owners to recruit skilled crew members from outside the UK.
£1.3 Million Support Fund for Welsh Seafood Sector

The Welsh Government has launched the new £1.3m Welsh Seafood Sector Resilience Scheme, to support Wales’ fisheries and aquaculture sector following disruptions caused by Covid-19 and Brexit. The available grants are subject to specified qualifying criteria, with applications closing on 31 March.

On 17 March, the EU Sub-Committee heard from experts about possible ecological impacts of North Sea offshore wind, including potential conflicts with fishing.

Scottish Government Provides Extra Support for Ports and Harbours
Ports and harbours across Scotland have received £1.8m following Brexit related losses. The investment will provide funds for safety improvements and repair works.

Defra Release Report on Co-Designing the Principles for Low Impact Fishing
The project report explores and documents the factors involved in defining low impact fishing, emphasising the importance of effective collaboration and co-design.

FIS Pushes for Progress in Scottish Seafood Sector with Two New Projects
FIS (Fisheries Innovation Scotland) launches two novel projects undertaking pioneering research in emissions technology and digitalisation of the Scottish fleet. 

Numerous and Diverse Job Vacancies across Scotland's Seafood Processing Sector
Job openings across the £1.6bn sector have sparked the recruitment campaign   'Sea A Bright Future', led by Seafish UK and the Scottish Seafood Association.
