MPs Debate Impacts of Brexit on UK Fishing Industry

The debate, held on 13 July, was led by Orkney and Shetland MP and APPG Member Alistair Carmichael. His closing remarks called for Parliament to engage as closely as possible with the fishing industry, devolved administrations and coastal communities going forward. Watch the recording here.
EFRA Committee Urges Pragmatism to Ease Friction for Seafood Exports to the EU

Their chief recommendation is for Defra to pursue a veterinary partnership agreement that would reduce regulatory burdens faced by British businesses. For these businesses to remain competitive, the MPs also stressed the importance of honouring the timetables for checking EU imports.
Environment Bill Amendment Proposed Mandated Electronic Monitoring on Vessels Over 10m

On 12 July, the House of Lords continued discussion on the Environment Bill. Looking to improve fisheries management, one tabled amendment (later withdrawn) involved enforcing Remote Electronic Monitoring on all over-10m vessels in UK waters.
Defra Seeking Views on New Technical Measures Affecting Nephrops-Directed Fisheries

Defra has launched a consultation on proposals for new technical measures affecting Nephrops-directed fisheries in Celtic Sea UK waters. They seek views on selectivity devices (introducing two new options), strengthening bags, and increasing the catch composition threshold from 5% to either 15 or 30%.

Marine Scotland and Marine Coastguard Agency Fund Fishermens' Safety
Seafish are running subsidised safety training courses for members of the UK fishing industry, thanks to new funding. Fishermen in Scotland can book training now.

Seafish CEO Advocates for Greater Recognition of Seafood in UK Food Strategy
Marcus Coleman is calling for UK food system decisions to better acknowledge the positive contribution of seafood, following the release of the National Food Strategy.

Marine Stewardship Council Pushes for Progress in UK Fisheries with Project UK The Project has seen 19 improvements within eight Fishery Improvement Projects in the last year, aiming for the fisheries to ultimately meet the MSC Fisheries Standard.
