Policy Brief on Outcomes from APPG Welfare Event

The APPG Secretariat has released its latest policy brief following the recent event on Wellbeing, Welfare and Life at Sea. The report discusses the root causes of threats to fishing communities’ health and wellbeing, problems regarding access to services, and how these issues can be addressed.
MMO Sets Out 10-Year Vision for England's Seas

The Marine Management Organisation has set out its broad aims for managing England’s waters over the next 10 years. This includes its role in facilitating changes in regulations following Brexit, completing all marine plans for England, and modernising fisheries control systems. 

Scottish Coastal Communities to Receive £9.7 Million

The revenue, generated by Crown Estate Scotland's marine assets, comes to £2 million more than last year. The funding will be split between Scotland’s 26 local authority areas that possess a coastline, according to their share of the adjacent sea area.

New Fisheries Bill Progresses Through Commons

The Fisheries Bill entered the House of Commons on 1 July. The second reading, when MPs will debate the main principles of the Bill, is scheduled for 1 September. The Secretariat's digest of initial significant changes since 2019 is accessible here.

UK Fisheries Administration Temporarily Suspend North Sea Scallop Fishing
The temporary ban covers the area around Dogger Bank, and is to allow data to be gathered on the shellfish stock regarding sustainable levels of fishing in the area.

Joint Statement from Maritime Organisations on Impacts of COVID-19
The NFFO, SFF and The Fishermen's Mission's joint statement emphasises that they and the government share a commitment to support the fishing industry.

Future of our Inshore Fisheries Project Announces Action Plan
The action plan will centrally involve active fishermen. The project champions co-management, collaborative science, access and rights, and compliance.

Bycatch App Pilot Released for West of Scotland
The app is co-designed by Scottish skippers to reduce bycatch of choke species. It uses real-time catch data to flag ‘hotspots’ of species such as cod and whiting.

Seafood Scotland Discusses Changing Market Trends
Seafood Scotland says that the market for Scottish seafood is shifting away from European markets and towards long-haul and domestic markets.
