New Post-Event Resources from APPG Secretariat

Recent materials from the Secretariat include the recording and panelists' answers from our recent event on Wellbeing, Welfare and Life at Sea, as well as a policy brief summarising the outcomes of June's Innovative Responses to the Pandemic event. Resources from our other events are also available on our website.

MMO Resumes Coastal Activities

The Marine Management Organisation has resumed quayside and sea-based coastal operations throughout England, following staff training in best practice under COVID-19. Their aim is to ensure sustainable fishing practices through monitoring compliance with regulations.

Appeals Process for Fisheries Response Fund Explained

The MMO has released details of the appeals process for the Fisheries Response Fund, for those who felt they met the fund’s criteria but did not receive payment. Cases could include where factual errors were made during the application or administration processes.

New Fisheries Bill Enters Commons

The House of Lords completed the third reading of the Fisheries Bill on 1 July, at which point it entered the House of Commons, where the first reading of the version received from the Lords took place on 2 July. The Secretariat's digest of initial significant changes since 2019 is accessible here.

ICES Releases North Sea Quota Recommendations for North Sea
Their advice includes cuts in cod quota, especially for the west of Scotland given the stock’s critical classification, and a large increase in haddock quota.

Launch of Home and Dry Campiagn to Advocate Fishing Safety
The new #HomeandDry campaign provides plenty of resources on new and pre-existing safety information, as well as links to training and guidance

Seafish Publish Digest of Recent Regulation Developments
July's regulation round-up covers “serious divergences” in EU-UK negotiations, the potential for a freeport in the Grimsby/Humber area, and preparations for exporters.

Maritime Charities Group Publishes Guide for Mental Health Training Courses
The Seafarers’ Mental Health Awareness and Wellbeing Training Standard helps raise awareness of mental health issues in the maritime sector.

New Group Advocates Supply Chain Improving Fisheries Management
The North Atlantic Pelagic Advocacy Group, comprising UK retailers and processors. aims to examine how the seafood supply chain can drive improvements.

Public Consultation on At-Sea Operations Social Benchmarking Criteria
The social compliance criteria, jointly developed by the Sustainable Supply Chain Initiative and the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative, welcomes public feedback.
