Consultation on Draft Joint Fisheries Statement Launched

Defra are seeking views on the draft Joint Fisheries Statement, released earlier this week. The statement has been developed by the four administrations of the UK and sets the future direction of UK fisheries management. Individuals, groups, and businesses have until 12 April to complete the online survey.
Fisheries Minister Statement on Trilateral Negotiations

UK fisheries minister, Victoria Prentis, has released a statement setting out the results of the UK's 2022 fisheries negotiations with the EU and Norway. Though the UK has secured 12,000t less quota in 2022 than 2021, she reports that this remains more than would have been available under the Common Fisheries Policy.
Economic Link Licence Condition to be Strengthened Following Consultation

Following a 2020 consultation, Defra have set out their plans to strengthen the economic link licence condition for UK registered vessels that fish against UK quota. The strengthened policy aims to increase the benefits of fishing to the economy, and to coastal communities in particular. 
MMO Guidance on IVMS for
Under-12m Fishing Vessels 


The MMO has published updated guidance for under-12m fishing vessels to help them prepare for the introduction of Inshore Vessel Monitoring Systems (IVMS) later this year. The guidance contains information on key timings and the availability of a grant towards the purchase and installation of a device.
£1 million of Funding Available to Welsh Fishing Industry

The European Maritime Fisheries Fund (EMFF) has established a scheme to support the industry in Wales as it adapts to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Members of the Welsh fishing community are encouraged to submit a Project Outline Form as soon as possible, followed by a full application by 25 March.

Amendment to New Immigration Bill Protects Seafarers Who Save Lives at Sea
The amendment to the bill, following a campaign by Nautilus International, ensures that seafarers who rescue people at sea will be exempt from criminal prosecution.

Minister Pow Delivers Keynote Speech at Coastal Futures 2022
The minister offered her thoughts on the restoration of marine and coastal habitats, and how effective fisheries management can contribute to these goals.

Fishers in South-West England Trial Innovative Low Emission Gear
The Sumwing beam trawl has been designed to 'fly' above the seabed, reducing drag and seabed contact. The trial seeks to assess potential benefits to UK trawlers.
