House of Commons Debates UK Fisheries

Led by APPG Chair Sheryll Murray MP, the debate on 12 February set out to explore potential opportunities for the UK fishing industry following Brexit. Topics discussed included catch monitoring, quota allocation, safety and funding.

Second Reading of New Fisheries Bill

On 11 February, the House of Lords undertook the second reading of the new Fisheries Bill. The wide-ranging debate included discussions on sustainable management, access to UK waters, and equitable quota sharing. The Bill (accessible here) will enter committee stage on 2 March.

George Eustice MP Named New Environment Secretary

George Eustice MP was appointed Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs on 13 February 2020, following the cabinet reshuffle. The former Minister of State at Defra will now be overseeing key legislative changes, including the progression of the new Fisheries Bill.
