A New Era: The Fisheries Act and Brexit

Our first event of 2021 will be a special public briefing event, where we will hear from government and fishing authorities about what the Fisheries Act 2020 and the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement mean for UK fishing.

Speakers will include the Rt Hon George Eustice MP, Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and Anne Freeman, Deputy Director of Domestic Fisheries and Reform at Defra, as well as representatives from the devolved administrations.

Questions will be pre-submitted in the weeks ahead of the event, to be answered by speakers during their presentations.

This briefing summarises the output from the APPG on Fisheries open Parliamentary webinar, 1 Dec 2020. The meeting brought together a diverse array of stakeholders from across the UK to discuss efforts to improve fishing safety. Government Sets Up Task Force to Help Seafood Businesses amid Brexit Chaos

In addition to a £23 million support package, the government is setting up a task force to assist Scottish seafood businesses that have been affected by the changes in export regulations following Brexit, by aiming to alleviate border issues.
EFRA Committee Launch Urgent Inquiry Following Brexit Border Delays

The Committee for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has launched a new urgent inquiry into how the Government can support meat & seafood exporters. They are calling for evidence by the 19th February on topics such as border disruptions and usefulness of guidance.

MMO Begins Consultation to Better Protect England's Offshore Areas

The Marine Management Organisation has launched a consultation seeking views on how it should manage four of England’s Marine Protected Areas. Proposed measures seek to prohibit & restrict the use of certain gear types.

Mollusc Exports to The EU: Class B Bivalves

Following disruption to the export from the UK to the EU of live bivalve molluscs from Class B waters, Defra is in talks with the European Commission to find a solution, and is also communicating with the UK shellfish sector.
