Fishing Perspectives on Brexit: Deadline Extension
The APPG on Fisheries is supporting the compilation of a report that will cover the experiences of members of the UK's fishing industry in light of Brexit. We are looking to collate responses from various members of the industry (including supply chain, processors, and exporters). The deadline for submitting input has now been extended to Tuesday 4 January.

We’re pleased to announce that our policy brief from October’s Aquaculture event is now available online. It provides an accessible overview of the aquaculture sector in each of the Home Nations, and examines pathways for future sustainable development.

Trilateral Quota Agreements Reached on Six Key Stocks in the North Sea

Trilateral fisheries negotiations between UK, the EU and Norway have agreed quotas for six key North Sea stocks for 2022. Scotland’s whiting, haddock, and herring quotas increased, the cod quota stayed the same, and saithe and plaice quotas decreased.
Scotland Makes Moves to Further Protect Critically Endangered Flapper Skate

Scotland is extending an urgent Marine Protected Area to protect a nursery ground for the critically endangered flapper skate. A public consultation will take place in February 2022 to inform decisions on the permanence of the site’s protected status.
Latest Phase of Licensing Talks for Vessels in the English Channel Concludes

The latest phase of intensive talks on licensing of fishing vessels in the English Channel has now concluded, says a government spokesperson. Following receipt of new evidence from the EU Commission, extra licenses for replacement vessels are being issued.

The campaign is focussing on providing advice to reduce risk of fishing vessels capsizing, following the UK’s worst year in a decade for fishing fatalities.

50 Vessels Join the Programme to Increase Onboard Safety Management
The Seafarers' Charity project has, so far, taken 50 vessels onboard, all of whom are now receiving professional support to develop safety management practices.

Merchant Shipping Act Changes Seek to Widen Range of Enforcement Powers
The changes look to increase flexibility of penalties, including the imposition of fines as an alternative to criminal prosecutions. MCA consultation is underway.
