Consultation Begins on Compensatory Measures for Unavoidable Impacts of Development on MPAs

Government has opened a 10-week consultation on best practice guidance for developers working within the UK's network of MPAs. They seek views on approaches to compensation, what it should involve, how it could be carried out, and the role of 'Net Gain'.
New Funding Announced to Aid Recovery of Scottish Seafood Businesses

£1.8m of funding, managed by Seafood Scotland, will help Scotland's seafood businesses recover from the economic impacts of Brexit and COVID-19. The funding aims to help businesses access new markets - both domestic and international - as well as boost sustainability and quality assurance.
Defra Urges Sustainable Management of Non-Quota Stocks Through New Calls for Evidence

The two calls have been launched in parallel, one on the management of the under 15m scallop fleet, and one on latent capacity (unused licences and entitlements) within the over 10m scallop and shellfish fleet. The consultation closes on 30 August.
Scotland's Resilience Fund Has Supported Over 850 Fishing Vessels in Response to Brexit and COVID-19

The fund aimed to assist shellfish catchers and producers affected by changes to exports and loss of access to domestic markets. Recipients of the grant packages have expressed gratitude for the aid, referring to the support as "an absolute lifeline".

60% of Fishermen and Families Express 'Room for Improvement' in Fishing Safety
Of these, 41% felt there is good work underway to make fishing safer, but there was a call for better safety campaigns and training courses, alongside increased funding.
