UK and Scottish Governments Announce Support Packages

Self-employed workers, including eligible fishermen, can be granted up to 80% of their salary under the new package, released in response to the COVID-19 outbreak. Payments are expected to be available by June. Marine Scotland has also released a targeted scheme for Scottish under-12m vessels.
MMO Releases Advice on Selling Catches to Public

The Marine Management Organisation has released a crib sheet detailing how UK fishermen can sell their catch directly to the public and businesses during the COVID-19 outbreak. It includes answers to frequently asked questions on paperwork, transport and record keeping.
MMO Creates 'One Stop Shop' for Fishermen's Support

The MMO has put together a document signposting the fishing industry towards available support initiatives. The guide provides brief synopses and contact information for a range of financial and welfare support measures that could benefit fishermen and fishing communities.

New Fisheries Bill Completes Lords Committee Stage

The House of Lords finished close analysis of the Fisheries Bill on 11 March. The Bill will now move on to the report stage, at a date to be announced. The Secretariat's digest of initial significant changes since 2019 is accessible here.

NFFO Pressures UK Government for Tailored Fisheries Support Package
Many fishermen will be able to claim support as self-employed workers, but the NFFO argues that there are industry-specific issues that need addressing.

Seafish Extends Deadline for Safety Equipment Funding Scheme
The deadline for the scheme, which supplies grants towards Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs), has been pushed to 30 April in light of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Comprising representatives from the fishing industry and government, suggested measures include alternative markets, financial support and regulatory changes.

Direct Seafood Delivery Campaign Takes Off in Cornwall
The new #FishToYourDoor campaign, set up by Seafood Cornwall to support the Cornish fishing industry during the COVID-19 crisis, has seen a significant response.

Study Suggests UK Fish Stocks Could Suffer From No-Deal Brexit
Mathematical models built at the University of Strathclyde found that unilateral UK and EU quotas in excess of recommended limits could have severe consequences.
