Climate Smart Fisheries Management

Climate change is already impacting fisheries, with warming seas influencing fish abundance, distribution, and ecosystem dynamics. Although some broad trends are evident, recent research suggests effects are often localised and species-specific, resulting in varied implications for fleets, fishing opportunities, and marine environments. Current fisheries legislation and management frameworks in the UK, as in many other countries, are often too rigid to respond effectively to these changing conditions.

This meeting will consider the measures needed to develop a more operationally responsive and adaptive UK fisheries management system. Discussion areas will include data and monitoring, collaboration, technology, regulatory reform, infrastructure, fleet structures and flexible management approaches. The session will also review existing examples of practical, ecosystem-based adaptive fisheries management that could help inform future policy and decision-making.
